Star Tetrahedron Lantern-Making Workshop
Presented by ArtJoy.org
With artist and instructor Toni Mikulka-Chang
Dates:
Friday, February 28 & Saturday, March 1
Schedule:
Two-day workshop (approximately 2.5–3 hours each day)
Cost:
$125 per person
All core materials included.
Class size limited to 10 participants.
In this immersive two-day workshop, participants will design and build a luminous geometric lantern in the form of a star tetrahedron—a striking three-dimensional sculptural form made from simple, elegant materials. Using wooden chopsticks, architect’s tracing paper, and nontoxic glue, you’ll construct a lightweight yet sturdy lantern that transforms into a glowing sculptural object.
The process is both meditative and playful. We’ll begin by building the geometric structure, then carefully skin the form with translucent tracing paper. This part of the process is intentionally tactile, sculptural, and a little messy—the lantern goes through a gooey, malleable stage before it begins to firm up and dry. You’ll shape, smooth, and refine the surface as you go, creating a uniquely handmade object that captures and diffuses light in a soft, magical way.
Because of the glue-and-paper process and the scale of the piece, this workshop is split over two days to allow for structural setting, drying time, and thoughtful finishing.
Lighting note:
Fairy lights will be provided and included in the materials for a beautiful, temporary glowing effect. For those who want a more permanent, professional lighting solution, lighting kits and hanging hardware will be available for purchase as an optional add-on.
What you’ll learn and do:
Build a 3D star tetrahedron structure from chopsticks
Learn simple structural construction techniques using nontoxic glue
Apply architect’s tracing paper to create a luminous lantern skin
Explore geometry, structure, and light diffusion
Shape, refine, and finish a large-scale sculptural lantern
Take home a completed lantern ready to hang and illuminate
Two-Day Curriculum
Day 1: Structure + Skin
Introduction to the star tetrahedron form and examples
Build the full geometric structure
Learn joining and reinforcement techniques
Begin applying tracing paper and glue skin
Shape and stabilize the lantern for overnight drying
End of day: lantern is structurally complete and partially skinned
Day 2: Finish + Illuminate
Assess structure and address any weak points
Complete paper skinning and surface refinement
Clean edges, strengthen seams, and refine form
Install fairy lights or optional purchased lighting hardware
Final reveal, photos, and packing for transport home
Who it’s for:
This workshop is designed for adults and teens (and focused, crafty kids with an adult). No prior building or art experience is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to get a little messy.
What you’ll take home:
A large, handmade geometric lantern that combines sculpture, craft, math, and light into one beautiful, glowing object—perfect for hanging in a window, lighting up a room, or bringing to a gathering or festival.
